Location: Toronto, Ontario
CCBR_Feature

Project Completion: August 2010
Project Value: $95.5 Million

The Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research was built for the University of Toronto to support top-level interdisciplinary research in bioengineering and disease. The building consists of five research platforms: Animal Models of Disease; Biomolecular Engineering; Functional Imaging; Protein Structure; and Proteomics and Bioinformatics. The 222,000 SF facility was engineered with extensive use of exposed-to-view cast-in-place concrete. The glass cladding is both functional and decorative. The building has 12 storeys above-grade with a layout based on “a half-floor” module plan. Within each module, 60% of the area is comprised of primary research laboratory and the remaining 40% of the area is comprised of laboratory support space and offices. Most of the assigned research laboratory space is designated for wet biochemistry investigations while the remainder of the space is for dry, instrumentation-based investigations. Sustainable features include the extensive use of exposed concrete within the laboratories and public areas providing thermal mass to assist with internal temperature control. A double façade system is used on the south side of the building to buffer environmental loads on this area of the building.

PMX provided project management services to U of T for all aspects of the project from design through to construction, commissioning, and occupancy.
