Lower Churchill Project – Phase 1
Client: Nalcor Energy, Muskrat Falls
Location: Newfoundland and Labrador
Project Completion: 2019
Project Value: $11 Billion
The lower Churchill River in Labrador is one of the best undeveloped hydroelectric sources in North America. With a combined capacity of more than 3,000 megawatts, Muskrat Falls and Gull Island will be able to provide 16.7 terawatt hours of electricity a year and, in turn, significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This level of mitigation is equivalent to taking 3.2 million vehicles off the road each year. The Lower Churchill Project will be developed in two phases: first, Muskrat Falls and then Gull Island.
Phase one of the Lower Churchill Project includes an 824 megawatt hydroelectric generating facility located at Muskrat Falls, 500 km of high voltage AC transmission lines, 1,100 km of high voltage DC transmission lines, a 30 km crossing high voltage DC submarine cable, as well as, converters, substations, and related assets.
