Sheridan College – Hazel McCallion Campus Expansion

The Sheridan College expansion project involves designing and constructing a new facility on the existing Hazel McCallion Campus in Mississauga.  This 220,000 SF expansion will enable Sheridan to increase the range of programs offered at the campus and accommodate up to an additional 3,200 full-time students.  The building will feature state-of-the-art classrooms, computer laboratories, a creative campus complex, faculty offices, and a gallery space to celebrate student creativity and innovation.

PMX is providing scheduling advisory services to Infrastructure Ontario (IO) for this Design-Build-Finance project being delivered under IO’s Alternative Finance and Procurement (AFP) program.

Havergal Junior School Expansion

Translational Biology and Engineering Laboratories Project (TBEP)

The University of Toronto (U of T) fit out the 14th floor of the MaRS Centre Phase 2 tower, located at 661 University Avenue, to better accommodate the growing research laboratory needs of the proposed Translational Biology and Engineering Laboratories Project (TBEP). TBEP is an integral component of the Rogers Centre for Heart Research which is part of a partnership with the Hospital for Sick Children and the University Health Network. The vision for the Centre for Heart Research and TBEP is to be labelled the first institution in the world to unify research, education, and innovation in congenital heart disease, regenerative medicine, and pediatric and adult heart disease under one sole focus: to be able to address heart health from adolescence to adulthood.

Thunder Bay Consolidated Courthouse

The Thunder Bay Consolidated Courthouse (TBCC) is located in Thunder Bay’s downtown south core which allows for better access to justice in the city and wider region. The services of the two existing courthouses, the courts of the Superior Court of Justice and the courts of the Ontario Court of Justice, have been consolidated within one modern facility. The new facility increases the total number of courtrooms available and provides better public access and security.

St. Thomas Consolidated Courthouse

Uniquely located within a residential neighbourhood, the St. Thomas Consolidated Courthouse (STCC) is a preservation and expansion project that provides expanded, modernized justice services for the region. The design preserves two significant heritage buildings: the Elgin County Courthouse and the former Land Registry Office which incorporates a large but discrete addition. The new courthouse contains eight courtrooms, two conference settlement rooms and space for: courtroom support, judiciaries, Crown Attorneys’ offices, the Police Court Bureau, victim witness assistance services, counsel services, prisoner holding, court services, building services, and parking. 3-storey windows as well as skylights provide ample natural lighting and create an open spatial separation between the existing courthouse and the new addition. In keeping with contemporary sustainable initiatives, the STCC is designed to be environmentally sustainable by utilizing a strategy minimizing the carbon footprint of the building while also preserving its existing heritage assets.

Waterloo Region Consolidated Courthouse

As part of a modernization program, the 420,000 SF Waterloo Region Consolidated Courthouse (WRCC) houses 30 courtrooms and consolidates a number of regional courts, including the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice. The courthouse meets the latest standards developed by the Ministry of the Attorney General which includes high security, accessibility, and LEED® Silver requirements. With large shatterproof windows, it has been designed to withstand multiple assaults and explosions without flattening.

Quinte Consolidated Courthouse

The Quinte Consolidated Courthouse (QCC) is a 171,000 SF facility which improves access to courthouse services in the Quinte Region by consolidating the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice previously operating in 4 locations. This 6-storey building houses: 11 courtrooms, a large ceremonial plaza, an open atrium, a lobby area interconnecting the first and second floors, an above ground parking structure, and has achieved LEED® Silver certification.

Durham Consolidated Courthouse

The Durham Consolidated Courthouse is a modern, integrated facility which consolidates the Superior Court and Ontario Court justice services previously delivered from eight locations across the Durham region. The 450,000 SF building located in downtown Oshawa, Ontario houses: 33 courtrooms, 3 motions rooms, 2 conference/settlement rooms, and related justice services. The main facility features include: technologically advanced building components, energy efficient design, and two remote video testimony rooms to accommodate vulnerable or child witnesses. The building design received LEED® Silver certification with an emphasis on energy management and conservation. 

PMX provided project management support to Project Co, the consortium responsible for the development and operation of the Durham Consolidated Courthouse.

Etobicoke General Hospital

It provides a broad range of inpatient and outpatient care services.  Part of the William Osler Health System, EGH is planning a major expansion of the West Wing facility, to be completed in 2019. The project is being delivered as a Design-Build-Finance-Maintain (DBFM) project under Infrastructure Ontario’s Alternative Finance and Procurement (AFP) model.

PMX is providing project scheduling and advisory services to the William Osler Health System including capital planning, risk management, and operational readiness advisory services throughout all phases of the project.

West Park Healthcare Centre (WPHC) is located on a picturesque piece of land on the banks of the Humber River in West Toronto. This facility is providing specialized rehabilitation, complex continuing, and long-term care services. These services involve helping individuals manage difficult health challenges like lung disease, diabetes, stroke, amputation, and musculoskeletal issues arising from a life-changing event or illness.

WPHC has a plan to develop the hospital and create an integrated healthcare campus that models the way of the future for healthcare delivery, education, and research. This includes development of a new Patient Care Centre which will include rehabilitation and complex continuing care beds, expanded ambulatory services, and state-of-the-art technologies in rehabilitative care enabling WPHC to deliver more advanced and integrated rehabilitative services as a result. This project is being delivered under Infrastructure Ontario’s model of Alternative Finance and Procurement (AFP).

PMX is providing project scheduling and advisory services to WPHC including capital planning, risk management, and operational readiness advisory services throughout all phases of the project.

Cornerstone Centre Development

Cornerstone Christian Community Church (CCCC) is developing a facility to become the new home for the organization, as well as provide the Community Church with a larger venue for hosting service, events, and other recreational activities. Phase 1 of the project consists of a 30,000 SF facility including a large, multi-purpose “gymnatorium” designed to convert easily between a worship centre, a gymnasium, or a community event hall. Other anticipated features over the phased project will include: a multi-purpose atrium which can be converted into a venue for cultural and community events, a café with simple food services, a dedicated Youth Lounge, multi-purpose rooms with interior partitions to adapt to a wide range of purposes, and spaces for outdoor events. 

PMX is providing project management advisory services as well as project monitoring services to CCCC.

Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research

The Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research was built for the University of Toronto to support top-level interdisciplinary research in bioengineering and disease. The building consists of five research platforms: Animal Models of Disease; Biomolecular Engineering; Functional Imaging; Protein Structure; and Proteomics and Bioinformatics. The 222,000 SF facility was engineered with extensive use of exposed-to-view cast-in-place concrete. The glass cladding is both functional and decorative. The building has 12 storeys above-grade with a layout based on “a half-floor” module plan. Within each module, 60% of the area is comprised of primary research laboratory and the remaining 40% of the area is comprised of laboratory support space and offices. Most of the assigned research laboratory space is designated for wet biochemistry investigations while the remainder of the space is for dry, instrumentation-based investigations. Sustainable features include the extensive use of exposed concrete within the laboratories and public areas providing thermal mass to assist with internal temperature control. A double façade system is used on the south side of the building to buffer environmental loads on this area of the building. 

PMX provided project management services to U of T for all aspects of the project from design through to construction, commissioning, and occupancy.

Leslie L. Dan Pharmacy Building

Dan Pharmacy Building at the St. George Campus in downtown Toronto is an award winning 167,000 SF facility which now serves as the new home for the University’s Faculty of Pharmacy.  This additional campus structure contains new research laboratories, offices, teaching facilities, and also enables a substantial increase in research activity while accommodating a doubling of enrollment in the University’s pharmacy programs.

Queen’s Centre

Queen’s University has made an addition to their campus with the construction of a student and athletics centre which opened in January 2010. Phase One of the Queen’s Centre more than doubled the capacity of Queen’s current facilities and included more than half of the facilities planned for the three-phase project. Representing a total area of about 517,000 SF, these facilities included: the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, a 2,000-seat varsity gymnasium, two practice gymnasiums, racquet courts, fitness facilities, an aquatic centre (including a 38-by-25 metre swimming pool with 14 lanes and diving facilities), locker rooms, underground parking facilities, loading dock, and new student space and food facilities. This project registered and targeted to receive LEED® Silver certification.

Mission 2050

Unprecedented globally, Mission 2050 (M2050) was planned to establish an integrated agri-ecology campus for dairy, poultry, and swine research, as well as technological development, innovation, and knowledge transfer. Bringing together multidisciplinary scientists, educators, and industry partners, M2050 operates using a conceptual framework of total resource recovery that incrementally closes the loop on problematic emissions through the cycling of organics, energy, water, and through novel co-product development.

Health Sciences Complex

Its internationally-renowned biomedical communications program includes lecture rooms, classrooms, teaching and research laboratories, offices, and support facilities.

Environmental and Earth Sciences Building

The University of Toronto (U of T) has completed work on a new Environmental and Earth Sciences Building at its Scarborough Campus in Toronto, Ontario.  The 66,000 SF facility houses 16 state of the art laboratories, support areas, a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Lab (NMR), offices for both faculty and research assistants, graduate workspaces and lounges, meeting rooms, and a lecture theatre capable of accommodating over 200 students. 

PMX was responsible for managing all aspects of the project for U of T from design through to construction, commissioning, and occupancy.

500 University Ave. Renovations

Biolab Renovation Project

The first phase of this initiative was the renovation of the Biology teaching laboratories located on the 4th floor of the William G. Davis building.

Facility Redevelopment Program

Therapure Biopharma Inc. (TBI) undertook a major renovation of their existing pharmaceutical manufacturing facility located in Mississauga, Ontario. The renovation included demolition of manufacturing space, removal of existing equipment, construction of new clean rooms, installation of new services and equipment, commissioning, and validation. All work was performed without interruption to operations elsewhere within the facility.

The programs undertaken at the facility included:

  • Manufacturing lines for production of 2 human plasma derived coagulation factors ($22M)
  • Manufacturing lines for production of human plasma derived bioscavenger / anti nerve gas agent ($17M)
  • Clinical scale manufacturing of multiple human plasma protein purification ($9M)
  • Aseptic liposome encapsulated antibiotics ($9M)
  • Miscellaneous renovations and additions for campaign manufacturing clean rooms ($3M)
  • Conceptual and detailed engineering design/procurement ready for human plasma derived IgG. ($1M)
  • Conceptual design for commercial plasma protein facility.
  • Site plan application for new facility to house commercial plasma protein manufacturing ($1M)

NHS Health Care Complex and Walker Family Cancer Centre

Niagara Health System (NHS) has completed the development of a 970,000 SF, state-of-the-art hospital in west St. Catharines. This facility is to support in-patient and out-patient services, including a new cancer centre with the capacity for three radiation machines, a cardiac catheterization lab, long-term mental health facilities, and a full range of acute inpatient and ambulatory services. This was the first Design-Build-Finance-Maintain (DBFM) Hospital project implemented under Infrastructure Ontario’s Alternative Finance and Procurement (AFP) program. The facility is designed to achieve LEED® Silver Certification. 

PMX provided overall project management and Owner’s representation services as part of NHS’ project management team.

West 5th Campus Mental Health and Addiction Hospital

St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) has completed the redevelopment of the mental health and addiction hospital on the West 5th Campus that opened to the public in February 2014. The new 850,000 SF facility provides: inpatient services for 305 patients, a mental health outreach program, a medical outpatient clinic, an outpatient diagnostic imaging clinic, an educational and research space, and laboratory services. This project was completed while keeping all programs in full operation throughout the redevelopment process. 

PMX provided project management support services as part of the SJHH’s project management team.

CAMH Development Project, Phase 1A & 1B

Phase 1A is the first phase of Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s (CAMH) 10-year, 3-phase redevelopment plan for its Queen Street site in Toronto. This phase of the redevelopment included CAMH’s modernized core bed buildings for clients of the Geriatric Mental Health Program, and the Child, Youth, and Family Program. Clients experience the benefits of care in new, home-like surroundings with private spaces, washrooms, reflection areas, exercise facilities, and gardens. 

PMX provided financial cost reporting and oversight services to the CAMH project management team and senior management for Phase 1A.

Phase 1B

Project Value: $550 Million

Phase 1B is a definitive break from the existing institutional Queen Street campus towards the more integrated, inclusive community. This Design-Build-Finance-Maintain (DBFM) hospital project has 3 new buildings with a total area of approximately 400,000 SF. This includes: (i) off-site leasing and relocation of 40,000 SF administrative programs, (ii) on-site relocation and remodeling of 75,000 SF, and (iii) the construction of over 600 linear feet of new city roads, services, and an electrical substation. 

PMX provided cost management oversight services to CAMH, including: implementation of cost control software, migration and management of historical data, monthly monitoring, and reporting and assisting in internal and external audits.

The building is registered for the Canada Green Building Council’s LEED® AP Gold certification.

M-Wing Expansion

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre has expanded their M-Wing building on their Bayview Avenue campus in Toronto, Ontario. The 300,000 SF vertical project added four new floors, two medical and two research, to the existing M-Wing building. The two medical floors consist of 120,000 SF to accommodate Sunnybrook’s Women and Babies Program, as well as the Perinatal & Gynaecology (P&G) program. Other features include a state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and expanded capacity for Labour and Delivery. 

PMX provided overall project management services to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre during the construction and transition phase of the project.

Peel Memorial Centre

Systemic Therapy Centre

Client: University Health Network, Princess Margaret Hospital

The 34,000 SF, multi-phased project of the Princess Margaret Hospital provides chemotherapy, transfusion, and supportive care to cancer patients. Located on Level 4 of the hospital, this additional Systemic Therapy Centre accommodates: reception and triage, 82 intravenous treatment spaces arranged in clusters, a specialized chemotherapy pharmacy supporting standard treatment and clinical trials, and a monitored stretcher area for blood drawing, patient assessment, and recovery. The project also included the relocation of the Lung and Sarcoma Clinic to Level 2 and Prostate Research to Level 3. 

PMX provided overall project management services to the University Health Network, Princess Margaret Hospital.

The facility, which houses up to 12 children and associate staff, was built over a number of years and phases of construction as funding was made available. 

PMX provided project management services to Cedarbrook Society during the final phase of construction.

Artillery Park Recreation Centre

Artillery Park Aquatic & Fitness Centre closed June 30, 2012 to undergo a series of renovations and upgrades. The renovations not only provided an enhanced level of service but also gave the aging facility a much needed face-lift and overhaul of all mechanical systems. Key features include: fully upgraded accessibility, new family, men’s, and women’s change rooms by the pool, more parking spots, new therapy/leisure pool with warmer water temperatures, larger lobby and gathering areas outside the aquatic and fitness centres, new fitness and cardio room with separate dry change rooms for men and women, salt water treatment for lap and therapy pools, new sauna, refurbished gymnasium and multi-purpose rooms, more windows to increase sunlight in the facility, improved mechanical systems, including increased hot water capacity, and enhanced HVAC systems.
